Our Mission

The mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Help Fill These Shelves

We would like to contribute to the education of children at the 2000 pupil primary school in Thondwe Malawi to promote reading and learning. The library which was built in 2017 with the support of Rotary clubs in Scotland is desperately short of books that support the teaching curriculum. The aim would be to purchase textbooks in English and Chichewa, the local language to achieve better learning outcomes and to develop good reading habits. The modest school development fund made possible by parent donations would not be sufficient to meet the demand of this expanding school.

Affordable locally published textbooks are available in Malawi and we hope this appeal will allow for the provision of sufficient books to raise education outcomes in the school. Children love going to school in Thondwe so let’s see if we can give them the brightest possible future.

Thondwe Primary school has an enrolment of 1873 students in standard 1-8 ranging from age 6-13. It has 19 classrooms and 29 teachers which means that some classes have up to 70 children usually sitting on the floor as desks are scarce, part of another Rotary project.
There are 3 school terms and children learn a variety of subjects, taking examinations in English, Chichewa, maths, science and social studies to gain a primary school leaving certificate in grade 8 in order to progress to secondary school.
